“What do I think…?” said Jae, aloud. Shannon’s head popped up and peered at him over the cubicle. He heard it and twisted his neck to see her. Right underneath her face was a poster that read “Missing Monkeys Found Shaved”, and it made him laugh.

“What do you think about what?”

He spun his chair and looked her way, sighing. “What do I think about existential angst?” He made it into a joke. “I have to go to Lakewood and talk to that woman, the daughter-in-law of the agent who handled the novel Doorways.” He got up and started to put on his coat.

“Good luck, I hope you find out something if you’re going to be driving all the way out there.”

“You and me both.” He picked up his messenger bag and lowered his voice. “I’m going to be just as glad if the very last trace of Kieran Anders died with the old woman.”

“Do your best, that’s all you can do.”

As he brushed past her he stopped. “Want to come?”

“I can’t, honey,” said Shannon with real regret. “I have so much work to do that Vega would have me flogged.”

Jae shrugged. “Thought I’d ask.”
